F24 - Khumbu Climbing Center
Located high in the Himalayas near Everest, the Khumbu Climbing Centre (KCC) is community-based programme that works to improve margins of safety for Nepali high-altitude workers through education in responsible climbing practices.
Founded in 2003, the centre is hidden away behind a birch wood in the shadow of the towering pyramidal peak of Ama Dablam. It often goes unnoticed by those travelling to Everest Basecamp but its impact on the local community has been immense.
Each winter, KCC offers courses in technical climbing skills as well as English language, mountain safety, rescue and wilderness first aid. Nearly 1,000 Nepali men and women have attended KCC since it opened, and many attest to the life-saving impact of the knowledge shared.
